DILI, 05 february 2026 (TATOLI) – Prime Minister Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão has highlighted the critical role of scientific education and professional training in geosciences, engineering, environmental studies, and energy for Timor-Leste’s youth.

He made the remarks during the opening of the 6th International Geoscience Conference, held Thursday at the GMN TV Multipurpose Hall. The event brought together experts, researchers, and policymakers from around the world to discuss the role of geoscience in national development.

PM Gusmão stressed that national sovereignty is not only inherited through history but must also be maintained through knowledge and expertise. He cited the Greater Sunrise project as an example of how scientific understanding can secure long-term benefits, including job creation, revenue, and industrial development along Timor-Leste’s southern coast.

The Prime Minister also underscored the strategic importance of the Timor-Leste Institute of Geosciences (IGTL) in advancing geological research and scientific knowledge to serve both the state and its citizens.

“Without this knowledge, there is no true sovereignty over our natural resources,” he said. “This conference brings together institutions from the Portuguese-speaking world, the Asia-Pacific region, and beyond, fostering an open dialogue on how geoscience contributes to national development, economic growth, and sustainable progress.”

PM Xanana emphasized that scientific knowledge must be translated into policies that improve citizens’ lives, protect communities, and create employment opportunities.

“The Government is committed to ongoing investment in science. We want Timor-Leste’s youth trained in geoscience, engineering, environmental studies, and energy. We also aim to build professional public institutions capable of planning, regulating, and making decisions based on evidence,” he said.

He added that the country’s inclusive and sustainable development must be rooted in knowledge, supported by international cooperation, and aligned with long-term national priorities.

“The choices we make regarding our land and sea will shape the nation we build. I am confident this conference will guide these decisions and contribute to Timor-Leste’s future over the next twenty-four years and beyond,” PM Gusmão concluded.

The 6th International Geoscience Conference 2026, organized by IGTL, will run for two days, February 5–6, under the theme “Geoscience for National Building: Data, Resources and Resilience for Timor-Leste’s Future.”
