DILI, 09 february 2026 (TATOLI) – President and Nobel Peace Laureate, Jose Ramos-Horta, extended his warmest congratulations to António José Seguro, President-Elect of the Portuguese Republic.
The election, which concluded with its second round on february 8, 2026, saw significant civic participation.
The clear result stands as a remarkable reaffirmation of Portugal’s commitment to the values of democracy, freedom, and the rule of law.
In a congratulatory letter, President Ramos-Horta highlighted the deep historical, cultural, and human ties that bind Timor-Leste and Portugal.
He expressed confidence that under President-Elect António Seguro’s leadership, Portugal will continue to play a fundamental role on the international stage.
Ramos-Horta said “It is with great satisfaction that I offer Your Excellency my warmest congratulations on your election as President of the Portuguese Republic. Timor-Leste follows with particular appreciation this moment in Portuguese democratic life, in a sister country with which we share deep historical, cultural, and human ties.”
“I am certain that, under Your Excellency’s leadership, Portugal will continue to play a fundamental role in the European Union, the Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries, and the United Nations System, asserting itself both within Europe and internationally,” the President said.
Ramos-Horta also reiterated Timor-Leste’s firm commitment to deepening the excellent relations of friendship, cooperation, and solidarity between the two nations.
The President concluded his message with best wishes for President-Elect António Seguro’s success in the high office he will soon assume.
