Australia will continue to support the development of Timor-Leste’s social sector

DILI, 10 february 2026 (TATOLI) – The Vice Prime Minister and Coordinating Minister for Social Affairs, Mariano Assanami Sabino, on tuesday, met with the Australian Ambassador to Timor-Leste, Caitlin Wilson, with the aim of identifying opportunities for the Australian Government to provide funding, particularly in the social sector.

The meeting, which took place at the Government Palace, was the first between the Vice Prime Minister and Ambassador Caitlin Wilson following the visit to Timor-Leste by the Prime Minister of Australia, Anthony Albanese.

Through this meeting, the Ambassador reaffirmed Australia’s commitment to supporting Timor-Leste’s development.

During the visit of the Australian Head of Government, Prime Minister Albanese expressed strong interest in supporting Timor-Leste through the development of human capital, with plans to invest a total budget of US$20 million over a ten-year period.

Albanese also expressed its intention to continue strengthening cooperation in sectors where collaboration already exists, particularly in the areas of education, health and labour services.

The Vice Prime Minister was accompanied at the meeting by his Principal Adviser, Cristopher Henrry Samson.
