DILI, 23 february 2026 (TATOLI) – The Least Developed Countries Group on Climate Change has convened its 7th Project Steering Committee (PSC) meeting in Addis Ababa, marking the final milestone of the project titled “Strengthening Engagement and Action by the Least Developed Countries Group on Climate Change.”

The meeting has been officially opened by the group’s Chair Ambassador Adão Soares Barbosa co – chairing the meeting with former Chair Evans Njewa

The project, which concludes this month, was funded by Global Environment Facility  and implemented by the UNIDO – United Nations Industrial Development Organization . It was delivered in collaboration with Climate Analytics and the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED), working closely with the LDC Group Secretariat.

This PSC meeting serves as a platform to ensure an orderly governance and leadership transition, including the formal handover of the project and the transition of the LDC Chair. Delegates are undertaking a shared review of progress, challenges, lessons learned and strategic opportunities that will inform the next phase of support.

A key focus of the meeting is strengthening the institutional foundations of the LDC Group to enhance long-term effectiveness. Discussions include improving communication and collaboration modalities, enhancing project visibility, refining logistical arrangements, clarifying Secretariat roles and responsibilities, considering legal status matters, identifying training needs, and strengthening gender and youth integration across activities.

The Committee is also conducting structured consultations to shape Phase II of the initiative. These consultations aim to validate and refine proposed outputs to ensure continued support for LDC negotiators and national focal points in advancing ambitious and equitable climate action under the UNFCCC process.

The project has played a critical role in enhancing coordination within the LDC Group, establishing the LDC Secretariat in Bonn Germany, development of the Gender and Youth Strategy, strengthening technical capacity for climate negotiations, and improving strategic engagement in global climate processes.
