DILI, 20 March 2026 (TATOLI) — Mari Alkatiri has extended Eid Al-Fitr greetings to Muslims in Timor-Leste and around the world, urging stronger interfaith dialogue and national unity amid global tensions.

In a message shared on his Facebook account, the Secretary-General of the FRETILIN congratulated the Muslim community marking Eid Al-Fitr 1447 Hijri, which signifies the end of the Ramadan fasting period.

Alkatiri said that this year’s Eid comes at a challenging global moment, shaped by rising tensions and conflicts worldwide.

He also highlighted the coincidence of Ramadan with the Christian season of Lent, which begins on Ash Wednesday and precedes Easter, describing it as an opportunity to promote peace and dialogue among religious communities.

“This coincidence brings a clear message: it is necessary to strengthen dialogue as a path to resolving conflicts,” he said.

The former prime minister addressed not only Muslims but all Timorese, regardless of religion, encouraging openness, coexistence, and mutual respect.

“On Eid Al-Fitr, we open our homes and our hearts to everyone,” he said.

However, Alkatiri announced that he will not host his traditional open house this year during Eid celebrations. He explained that the decision reflects his wish to accompany the Lenten period through to Easter as a sign of respect and solidarity with the country’s predominantly Catholic population.

“We must walk together until Easter, a moment of renewal and new hope for all,” he said.

Alkatiri also reflected on his identity as a Muslim in a largely Catholic nation, reaffirming his commitment to national unity and interreligious coexistence.

Concluding his message, he expressed hope that the celebration of Easter in early April would mark a new beginning for all Timorese, grounded in spiritual renewal, solidarity, and a shared future.

“May we be reborn with new ideas and move forward together,” he said.
