DILI, 01 April 2026 (TATOLI) — Indonesia and Timor-Leste will hold a third round of maritime boundary negotiations in Singapore this month as part of ongoing efforts to peacefully resolve their shared sea border.
At a farewell ceremony in Dili on Tuesday, outgoing Indonesian Ambassador to Timor-Leste Okto Dorinu Manik said the talks are expected to take place in the third week of April, building on constructive and positive discussions.
According to the ambassador, the negotiation process has so far shown encouraging developments, characterized by a spirit of mutual understanding and cooperation.
“We are grateful that the meetings have proceeded smoothly in a friendly and warm atmosphere, without unnecessary disputes. This is what we hope for, so both sides can move forward together,” he added.
Maritime boundary talks between the two countries have proceeded in stages, starting with a first round in Dili in August 2025 and followed by a second round in Yogyakarta from December 8 to 10, 2025. The Yogyakarta meeting was attended by Timor-Leste Prime Minister Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão and delegations from both sides.
During those discussions, both sides addressed technical and legal aspects and reaffirmed their strong commitment to reaching a solution based on international law, particularly the principles of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). The outcome was considered positive, with both parties agreeing to continue constructive dialogue.
Ambassador Manik reaffirmed Indonesia’s commitment to strengthening bilateral ties, including support for Timor-Leste’s full membership in ASEAN.
He said Indonesia supports Timor-Leste’s development and expressed hope that both countries can advance together.
