DILI, 01 April 2026 (TAATOLI) – The United States and Timor-Leste launched a new Emergency Radio Communications Network, marking a significant milestone in strengthening national disaster response capabilities.
The ceremony took place during the official visit of Major General Andrew J. Chevalier, Adjutant General of the Rhode Island National Guard, whose engagements in Timor-Leste focused on advancing security cooperation, disaster response capacity building, and institutional partnerships.
This initiative will enhance Timor-Leste’s ability to respond to emergencies, protect lives, and strengthen coordination across key security and civilian agencies.
The project, developed in close coordination with the Ministry of the Interior, Civil Protection Authority (APC), and National Police of Timor-Leste (PNTL), Australia’s Timor-Leste Police Development Program (TLPDP), U.S. Embassy Regional Security Office, and U.S. Indo-Pacific Command will deliver critical communications infrastructure, including radios, radio tower systems, and emergency call and operations center equipment, along with technical training.
“Once completed, this emergency radio communications network will enable more effective coordination among the PNTL, APC, F-FDTL, and emergency services at local and national levels,” said in a statement.
The initiative supports Timor-Leste’s broader goal of meeting regional standards and advancing its integration into ASEAN, strengthening national institutions and emergency response capabilities. The project contributes to long-term stability and resilience in Timor-Leste and across the Indo-Pacific region.
The United States is proud to support this effort in response to the priorities identified by the Government of Timor-Leste and remains committed to working together to build a safer, stronger, and more resilient future.
