DILI, 09 April 2026 (TATOLI) – At the Philippine Mission to the United Nations’ side event, “Sports for Peace and Development: Leveraging Sports for Youth Empowerment and Prevention of Violent Extremism,” Timor-Leste recognized the inspiring role of keynote speaker Emmanuel “Manny” Pacquiao, whose contributions have positively influenced young people around the world, including in Timor-Leste.
Permanent Representative of Timor-Leste to the UN, Ambassador Dionisio Babo Soare emphasized the importance of investing in youth as drivers of peace and sustainable development.
“Sport is a powerful tool that promotes physical health, social cohesion, discipline, and inclusion—especially for youth in rural and vulnerable communities,” Ambassador Soares said in a statement.
The Ambassador underscored how sport helps unify communities, strengthen national identity, and reduce the risk of marginalization and exposure to extremism.
He reaffirmed Timor-Leste’s commitment to working with international partners to expand youth opportunities through sport and support their positive role in peace and development.
Manny Pacquiao made a landmark visit to Timor-Leste in 2023. He was warmly welcomed by President José Ramos-Horta and met with the country’s Prime Minister during his trip, where he shared his plans to promote boxing in Timor-Leste.
The visit reflects Pacquiao’s ongoing commitment to sports diplomacy and youth engagement in the region.
