DILI, 13 April 2026 (TATOLI) — The President of the Republic, Jose Ramos Horta held a consultative meeting with Finance Minister Santina Viegas on Monday at the Presidential Palace to discuss the country’s financial strategy.

A key issue raised during the meeting was the government’s response to the global economic crisis.

Viegas informed the President that the Ministry of Finance is currently preparing a supplementary budget (Rectification Budget).

“This adjustment is designed to mitigate the impact of rising global prices by securing funding for essential subsidies, specifically targeting food security and fuel costs to protect the purchasing power of the Timorese people,” Minister Viegas told reporters after meeting the head of state in Dili, today.

During the meeting, they also discussed finalizing pending government payments and coordinating with the Civil Service Commission to ensure administrative stability across ministries.

In addition, the minister briefed the president on budget execution for the first quarter, noting that spending is typically lower at the beginning of the fiscal year but is being closely monitored to ensure efficiency.

Ramos-Horta underscored the need for strong coordination across government institutions to ensure the effectiveness of the planned measures.

He highlighted “the importance of inter-ministerial coordination to ensure that the proposed financial measures effectively address the needs of the population during these challenging times.”
