DILI, 22 May 2026 (TATOLI) – The President of the Republic, Jose Ramos-Horta, welcomed the Ambassador of Canada, Jess Dutton, for a productive meeting focused on deepening bilateral relations and exploring new commercial opportunities.

During the engagement, Ambassador Dutton briefed the Head of State on the activities of a high-level Canadian commercial delegation currently visiting Timor-Leste, which includes representatives from the National Bank of Canada, BlackBerry, and the Canada ASEAN Business Council. The discussions highlighted promising avenues for private sector investment and strategic partnerships that align with Timor-Leste’s national development goals.

Reaffirming Canada’s commitment to the nation’s sustainable growth, Ambassador Dutton highlighted a $15 million Canadian concessional financing contribution, facilitated through the Asian Development Bank, for the construction of a new solar park.

Beyond green energy and climate resilience programs, the meeting also explored potential cooperative ventures in the oil, gas, and extractive sectors. These initiatives are expected to strongly support the President’s vision for generating local employment and driving robust economic growth.

The diplomatic encounter concluded with a reflection on the deep historic bonds shared by the two nations, coinciding with the celebration of Timor-Leste’s 24th Restoration of Independence Day.

Praising President Ramos-Horta as a global statesman, Ambassador Dutton recalled Canada’s foundational support for Timor-Leste, notably the deployment of over 600 Canadian forces personnel to the UN-mandated mission 24 years ago, underscoring a legacy of enduring friendship and mutual respect.
