Timor-Leste and Vietnam explore new avenues for diplomatic and economic collaboration

DILI, 30 May 2026 (TATOLI) – On the sidelines of the 23rd IISS Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore, President of the Republic Jose Ramos-Horta held a productive bilateral meeting with the President of Vietnam, Tô Lâm.

This high-level encounter focused on deepening the historical bonds between the two nations and exploring new avenues for diplomatic and economic collaboration.

President Ramos-Horta congratulated President Tô Lâm on his recent appointment, signaling a new chapter in the robust partnership between Timor-Leste and Vietnam.

A significant highlight of the discussion was Vietnam’s announcement regarding the process of establishing a resident Embassy in Dili, a move that will significantly streamline bilateral cooperation.

Ramos-Horta expressed his profound gratitude for Vietnam’s unwavering support for Timor-Leste’s accession to ASEAN as its 11th member. Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to regional stability, with Vietnam pledging to continue its support as Timor-Leste became full membership and its future ASEAN Chairmanship in 2029.

The dialogue also touched upon strategic development goals, including infrastructure, telecommunications, and the energy sector.

The President briefed his counterpart on Timor-Leste’s progress regarding the Greater Sunrise project and the nation’s transition toward renewable energy, specifically through solar initiatives and maritime investment.

The meeting concluded with a mutual agreement to foster further private-sector cooperation to drive economic growth and industrial resilience in both countries.
