Timor-Leste urges stronger support for Least Developed Countries at Doha Review

DILI, 24 June 2026 (TATOLI) — Timor-Leste has warned that least developed countries (LDCs) are facing growing financial pressures, including declining development assistance and rising debt burdens, which it said are threatening progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
In its statement during the Joint General Assembly-ECOSOC Special Thematic Event on the Midterm Review of the Doha Programme of Action for the Least Developed Countries, Timor-Leste highlighted the difficult situation facing LDCs halfway through the implementation of the DPoA. It pointed to declining development assistance and rising debt burdens, warning that these pressures threaten progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals.
Timor-Leste argued that development should be measured not only by income but also by resilience and long-term sustainability.
The country is investing in education, social protection, disaster preparedness, and economic diversification, while using its petroleum revenues to build human capital and strengthen climate resilience.
Timor-Leste also emphasized the importance of economic integration and international cooperation.
The country highlighted its recent membership in the WTO and ASEAN as key steps toward modernization and diversification, and called for stronger global partnerships to ensure the successful implementation of the Doha Programme of Action and better outcomes for all LDCs by the 2027 review.
