DILI, 25 June 2026 (TATOLI) – The Governor-General of the Commonwealth of Australia, Sam Mostyn AC, extended her deepest condolences to the Timorese people, following the passing of Francisco Guterres Lú-Olo, former President of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Governor-General said Lú-Olo dedicated his life to serving Timor-Leste and played a leading role in the country’s struggle for self-determination.
“He was a leading figure in Timor-Leste’s struggle for self-determination and made a significant contribution to the building of his nation following the restoration of independence,” she said.
Mostyn highlighted Lú Olo’s leadership during his term as president from 2017 to 2022, a period described as significant in Timor-Leste’s national development.
“He also made important contributions to Timor-Leste’s relationship with Australia, including by supporting connections between the veterans’ communities of our two countries,” she said.
Governor-General stressed that Lú Olo’s role in Timor-Leste’s national story would be remembered with deep respect by generations of Timorese people.
“On behalf of all Australians, the Governor-General conveys her sincere condolences to his family and loved ones, and to the people of Timor-Leste, as they mourn the loss of a respected national leader,” she concluded.
