PNTL participates in High-Level UN Talks on Counter-Terrorism

DILI, 29 June 2026 (TATOLI) – The National Police of Timor-Leste (PNTL) participates in the United Nations Counter-Terrorism Week at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, reaffirming Timor-Leste’s commitment to international cooperation in preventing and countering terrorism and violent extremism.

The delegation will be participating in a series of high-level discussions, thematic sessions, and capacity-building events alongside law enforcement officials, policymakers, security experts, and representatives from United Nations Member States and international organizations.

As one of the world’s youngest nations, Timor-Leste recognizes the importance of learning from the experiences and best practices of other countries in addressing the evolving and increasingly complex challenges posed by terrorism and transnational organized crime.

The UN Counter-Terrorism Week provides a valuable opportunity to strengthen institutional capacity, enhance professional expertise, and foster partnerships that contribute to national, regional, and global security.

It also serves as an important platform for dialogue, cooperation, and the exchange of knowledge. It emphasizes that effective counter-terrorism measures must be implemented in full respect of international law, human rights, and the rule of law.

“Through its participation, the PNTL continues to strengthen its capacity to prevent and respond to emerging security threats while promoting a professional, inclusive, and community-oriented policing approach,” said in a statement.

During the opening session at the General Assembly Hall, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres underscored four key priorities for strengthening global counter-terrorism efforts: prevention, international cooperation, the responsible use of technology, and renewed commitments by Member States to uphold the United Nations Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy.

He emphasized that terrorism cannot be defeated through security measures alone, but requires sustained international solidarity, respect for human rights, and addressing the conditions conducive to the spread of terrorism.

The Government of Timor-Leste remains committed to working closely with the United Nations and international partners to build resilient institutions, strengthen national security capabilities, and contribute actively to global efforts aimed at promoting peace, security, stability, and sustainable development.
