DILI, 30 June 2026 (TATOLI) — The Government of Timor-Leste has extended its deepest condolences and solidarity with the people of Venezuela following the devastating earthquakes that struck the South American nation on June 24.

“The Government of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste extends its deepest condolences to the bereaved families and reiterates its solidarity with the people of Venezuela in the wake of this tragic event,” the Government said in a statement.

The death toll from the powerful twin earthquakes that struck Venezuela last week has risen to more than 1,719, Venezuelan authorities confirmed on Monday.

“During this period of mourning, our thoughts, expressions of solidarity, and hopes are with the family members and friends who have lost loved ones, with the injured, and with the authorities, emergency response teams, and volunteers who are working tirelessly to locate survivors and offer aid to the victims,” read the statement.

UNICEF estimated on Saturday that 1.8 million people, including 680,000 children, require humanitarian assistance following the disaster.

On Sunday, June 28, the President of the National Assembly of Venezuela, Jorge Rodriguez said the earthquakes left 12,721 people homeless and damaged 774 buildings, including 189 that collapsed and 585 that were partially damaged.

He added that 38 hospitals were damaged, although emergency repairs were carried out to restore essential services. The earthquakes also damaged 44 shopping centers and 1,645 other buildings and public infrastructure.
