PM Gusmão briefed on g7+ peacebuilding and electoral missions
DÍLI, 30 July 2026 (TATOLI) — Prime Minister Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão received a briefing on Thursday from the g7+ Secretariat on the organisation’s expanding peacebuilding initiatives, election observation missions and international cooperation efforts aimed at supporting countries affected by conflict and fragility.
The briefing took place during a visit by the Prime Minister to the g7+ Secretariat headquarters in Dili, where he met Deputy Secretary-General Habib Mayar to review the organisation’s recent activities and upcoming programmes.
Speaking after the meeting, Gusmão said the g7+ had updated him on its work in supporting electoral processes, both in member states and in other countries seeking to benefit from the organisation’s experience in peacebuilding and democratic governance.
The Prime Minister said the organisation recently deployed election observation missions to São Tomé and Príncipe and the Solomon Islands, where the electoral processes were conducted peacefully despite some challenges.
“The organisation recently observed elections in São Tomé and Príncipe and the Solomon Islands. While every election has its challenges, the voting process was carried out successfully,” Xanana said.
He said the g7+ is receiving increasing international recognition for its role in promoting dialogue, reconciliation and state-building in countries emerging from conflict.
Xanana also announced that a delegation from Yemen is expected to visit Timor-Leste in August to learn from the country’s experience in national dialogue and reconciliation following its struggle for independence.
“They are not coming here to be taught, but to see our experience as a country that has embraced dialogue and reconciliation,” he said.
The Prime Minister stressed that Timor-Leste intends to share its experience with other nations through mutual exchange rather than formal instruction.
“We will share what we have and what we can contribute. This shows that the role of the g7+ is gaining international recognition and that other countries are interested in becoming part of this organisation,” he said.
According to Xanana, the g7+ will continue promoting dialogue, peace and stability through international engagement. He added that the organisation is expected to participate as an observer in a meeting of the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP) in August, where discussions will focus on solutions to conflicts and challenges facing fragile states.
Founded in 2010, the g7+ is an intergovernmental organisation of conflict-affected and fragile countries that advocates country-led approaches to peacebuilding, state-building and sustainable development. It works to strengthen cooperation among member states while promoting international policies tailored to the needs of fragile nations.
