President Ramos-Horta reaffirms shared democratic values in meeting with Vanuatu Parliament Speaker

DÍLI, 31 July 2026 (TATOLI) – President of the Republic, José Ramos-Horta held a courtesy meeting with the Speaker of the Parliament of Vanuatu, Hon. Stephen Dorrick Felix Ma’au Malfes, on Wednesday in Port Vila.

The meeting took place as part of the President’s historic first State Visit, following an official invitation from the Government and People of Vanuatu to participate in the nation’s 46th Independence Day celebrations on July 30.

During the engagement, the two leaders reaffirmed the profound historical bonds of friendship and solidarity that unite Timor-Leste and Vanuatu.

They reflected on the shared history of both nations, emphasizing their mutual struggles for self-determination, the defense of national sovereignty, and a steadfast commitment to peace and democracy in the Pacific region.

The visit to the Parliament also provided an opportunity to highlight the vital role of democratic institutions in consolidating the rule of law and driving national development.
