Timor-Leste calls for inclusive AI governance at UN briefing

DÍLI, 31 July 2026 (TATOLI) – At the Group of Friends for International Cooperation on Al Capacity-Building “Briefing on the 2026 World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC)”, Timor-Leste emphasized that AI should help reduce global inequalities rather than widen them.

Timor-Leste called for an inclusive global AI system that ensures developing countries have equal opportunities to benefit from AI and contribute to shaping its future.

It highlighted the importance of open-source AI, capacity building, and international cooperation to help countries with limited resources develop digital skills, improve access to technology, and create AI solutions that reflect their own languages, cultures, and development priorities. It also welcomed new international AI initiatives that promote training, technology transfer, and equitable access to computing resources.

“AI should be guided by fairness, human dignity, and shared responsibility,” said in a statement.

Timor-Leste urged the international community to work together to bridge the digital divide so that AI becomes a tool for resilience, innovation, and sustainable development that benefits all countries, regardless of their size or level of development.
