At least eight dead, thousands displaced by torrential rains in the Philippines

DÍLI, 10 August 2026 (TATOLI) – At least eight people have died, and around 223,000 families have been affected by torrential rains and severe flooding in the Philippines, as southwest monsoon (habagat), together with tropical cyclones Luis and Maymay, continue to disrupt communities and trigger widespread damage, according to the Office of Civil Defense (OCD), as cited by the Philippine News Agency (PNA).

PNA reported that the deaths were caused by landslides, rockslides, falling trees, drowning and electrocution.

OCD Public Information Officer Diego Mariano said nine people have been injured so far, adding that authorities had also reported one person missing.

“Affected populations were estimated at around 223,000 families and these is equivalent to 752,000 persons residing in Region 1 (Ilocos Region), Region 2 (Cagayan Valley), Region 3 (Central Luzon), Region 5 (Bicol Region), Region 6 (Western Visayas), Region 9 (Zamboanga Peninsula), Cordillera Administrative Region, Calabarzon (Region 4A) and Mimaropa (Region 4B),” PNA said in its latest update.

Around 412 evacuation centers had been opened, providing shelter to about 10,000 families, or 34,400 people, according to the latest figures.

The storms had damaged about 300 houses, including 276 partially damaged and 24 totally damaged.

“Agriculture damage was estimated at around PHP3.53 million while those for infrastructure was placed at PHP1.12 billion,” according to Mariano.
