Govt brings specialist medical consultations to children with disabilities at Madre Alma Convent
DÍLI, 13 August 2026 (TATOLI) — The Office of the Vice-Prime Minister and Coordinating Minister for Social Affairs (MKAS), in partnership with the Timor-Leste Medical Association (AMTL), organised a mass medical consultation at the Madre Alma Convent in Pantai Kelapa, Dili, this Thursday.
The initiative brought together specialist doctors and primarily aimed to provide healthcare services to orphaned children and people with disabilities living at the institution.
However, the consultations were not limited to the convent community. Children, adults and elderly people living in the surrounding area were also able to access the medical services, extending the initiative’s support to the local population.
During the activity, the Vice-Prime Minister, Mariano Assanami Sabino thanked all the organisations and individuals involved, particularly the specialist doctors who volunteered their time to provide medical consultations to children and elderly people.
On the occasion, he stressed that the State and the Government have a responsibility to ensure care and attention for all citizens, regardless of age or physical condition, reaffirming the commitment to leaving no one behind.
The Vice-Prime Minister also recognised the work carried out by the religious sisters at Madre Alma Convent, highlighting their dedication, patience and commitment to caring for the children.
“The Government, through the Ministry of Social Solidarity, will continue to work together with you, paying attention to and caring for the children,” he said.
Addressing parents of children with disabilities, he also offered words of encouragement, urging them not to lose hope or give up on caring for their children. He stressed the importance of supporting these children with love, dedication and affection, so that they can grow up feeling supported and never alone.
The person in charge of Madre Alma Convent, meanwhile, expressed her gratitude to the Vice-Prime Minister, the Minister of Social Solidarity and the Deputy Minister for the initiative and for visiting the convent, allowing them to meet the children directly and facilitate access to specialist healthcare.
The initiative therefore reinforces the Government’s commitment to social inclusion and access to healthcare, particularly for the most vulnerable groups in Timor-Leste.
