President Ramos-Horta expresses solidarity with Indonesia following devastating earthquake in Flores

DÍLI, 18 August 2026 (TATOLI) – President of the Republic and Nobel Peace Laureate, Jose Ramos-Horta, has conveyed his deepest condolences to the Government and people of Indonesia following the catastrophic earthquake that struck the island of Flores, resulting in extensive loss of life, injuries, and widespread destruction.

In a formal letter addressed to Prabowo Subianto Djojohadikusumo, President of the Republic of Indonesia, on August 18, 2026, President Ramos-Horta expressed profound sorrow over the disaster, which has displaced thousands and severely damaged homes, health facilities, schools, and critical infrastructure.

“I wish to convey to Your Excellency my deepest condolences and to express the profound solidarity of Timor-Leste with the families who have lost their loved ones, as well as with all those affected by this tragic disaster. At this time of pain and suffering, Timor-Leste stands in fraternal solidarity with the people of Indonesia, particularly the communities in the areas of Flores most severely affected, who are facing the consequences of this catastrophe and the immense challenges resulting from the destruction of infrastructure and disruption to access to essential services,” stated President J. Ramos-Horta.

The President extended gratitude to the search and rescue teams, healthcare professionals, security forces, and volunteers who continue to work courageously under extremely difficult conditions to assist affected populations.

President Ramos-Horta concluded his message with sincere wishes for the speedy recovery of the injured and expressed hope that relief and reconstruction efforts would soon alleviate the suffering of impacted communities.
