Timor-Leste, Cabo Verde strengthen historic ties

DILI, 18 August 2026 (TATOLI) – The President of the Republic, José Ramos-Horta, received today, at the Nicolau Lobato Presidential Palace, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Communities, and National Defence of Cabo Verde, Manuel Amante da Rosa, for an audience dedicated to strengthening bilateral relations between Timor-Leste and Cabo Verde.
The meeting highlighted the profound historical and friendly ties that unite the two countries, a relationship that dates back to the period before their respective independences. The two countries also share a long history of cooperation and personal friendship between their leaders, dating back to their joint work at the United Nations in 1981.
During the audience, Minister Manuel Amante da Rosa presented President Ramos-Horta with new opportunities to deepen and diversify bilateral cooperation in areas of common interest. Both highlighted the shared journey of Timor-Leste and Cabo Verde as sovereign nations and active members of the international community, recognizing the potential to expand cooperative relations between the two countries.
The meeting also provided an opportunity to reaffirm the importance of solidarity between the Timorese and Cabo Verdean peoples and to explore new areas of cooperation that can contribute to the development and strengthening of bilateral relations.
The Presidency of the Republic welcomes the efforts aimed at revitalizing and deepening diplomatic ties between Timor-Leste and Cabo Verde, reaffirming the commitment to continue promoting relations of friendship, solidarity, and cooperation between the two peoples.
