President Ramos-Horta expresses solidarity with China following devastating floods and landslides

DÍLI, 31 August 2026 (TATOLI) – The President of the Republic and Nobel Peace Laureate, Jose Ramos-Horta, has conveyed his deepest condolences to the President, Government, and people of the People’s Republic of China, with special sympathy for the families of victims affected by the devastating landslides and floods that recently struck the Tibet Autonomous Region.
In an official letter dated 31 August 2026 addressed to the President of the People’s Republic of China, Xi Jinping, President Ramos-Horta expressed profound sadness over the tragic loss of life, the high number of people reported missing, and the extensive damage caused to communities and infrastructure in the region.
“I wish to express my deepest condolences to Your Excellency, the Government, and the people of the People’s Republic of China, particularly to the families of the victims of the devastating landslides and floods that recently struck the Tibet Autonomous Region,” said Ramos-Horta. “At this time of great suffering, I wish to convey to the families who have lost their loved ones our sincere solidarity and compassion, as well as our wishes for strength and hope to all those affected by this tragedy. We also extend our solidarity to the emergency and rescue teams who continue to work under extremely difficult conditions to locate those missing, assist survivors, and respond to the risks of further flooding and landslides.”
Timor-Leste stands firmly with the people of the People’s Republic of China during this difficult time and hopes that the search, rescue, and recovery efforts prove successful, and that the affected communities are able to recover and rebuild swiftly.
