President Ramos-Horta expresses condolences to former Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir on the passing of his wife

DÍLI, 29 September 2026 (TATOLI) – The President of the Republic and Nobel Peace Laureate, Jose Ramos-Horta, extended his condolences to the Honourable Mahathir Mohamad, former Prime Minister of Malaysia, and his family, following the passing of his beloved wife, Siti Hasmah Mohamad Ali, at the age of 100.
In an official letter of condolences addressed to the Honourable Mahathir Mohamad, former Prime Minister of Malaysia, and family, on 28 September 2026, President Ramos-Horta conveyed the heartfelt condolences of the Timorese people to the former Prime Minister and to the entire bereaved family on this painful loss.
In his message, President José Ramos-Horta said: “It was with sadness that I learned of the passing of your beloved wife, Siti Hasmah Mohamad Ali. On my own behalf, on behalf of my family, and on behalf of the people of Timor-Leste, I wish to convey to Your Excellency and to the entire bereaved family my most heartfelt condolences on this painful loss.”
Siti Hasmah was a woman of great dignity, humanity, and dedication to public service. As one of the first Malay women to enter the medical profession, she devoted her life to public health, with particular attention to maternal and child health and to the well-being of families and communities.
Throughout her extraordinary life, she was also a constant and devoted presence at Your Excellency’s side, sharing a long journey of service to Malaysia and its people. May the memory of such a long, generous, and devoted life bring comfort to all those who had the privilege of knowing and loving Tun Siti Hasmah.”
The President conveyed his deepest sympathy and friendship to Mahathir and the entire Mahathir family at this time of profound sorrow, and offered prayers that God grant them strength, courage, and serenity in facing this irreparable loss.
