President Ramos-Horta and Australia’s Minister Chris Bowen align climate priorities in Fiji

DÍLI, 05 October 2026 (TATOLI) – During his working visit to Fiji today, President of the Republic, Jose Ramos-Horta held a crucial bilateral meeting with Chris Bowen, Australia’s Minister for Climate Change and Energy.
The high-level dialogue focused on strengthening mutual cooperation in urgent climate action and expediting the renewable energy transition across the region. Taking place on the margins of the Pacific pre-COP meetings ahead of the upcoming COP31 global climate summit in Turkey, the engagement underscores Timor-Leste’s strategic partnership with Australia as both nations navigate pressing environmental challenges.
A central focus of the discussion was securing robust adaptation financing for vulnerable island states, an issue of existential importance for both Timor-Leste and its Pacific neighbors. President Ramos-Horta emphasized the critical need for accessible, long-term funding mechanisms like the Pacific Resilience Facility, which aims to finance localized climate projects and disaster preparedness across the region. Such initiatives are vital to empowering small island developing states to implement innovative coastal protections against rising sea levels.
By bridging Southeast Asia and the Pacific, President Ramos-Horta’s diplomacy with Australian counterparts ensures that the collective voices of climate-vulnerable nations are amplified, advocating for a unified and well-financed approach to securing a sustainable, resilient future for all island peoples.
