DILI, may 18, 2021 (TATOLI) – The new representative of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) to Timor-Leste, Bilal Aurang Zeb Durrani, urged the Government to focus the attention on the child protection law.
Bilal Durrani showed his concern during the meeting with the Prime Minister of Timor-Leste, Taur Matan Ruak, at his residence Farol Dili.
“I ask for the support of the Prime Minister, Taur Matan Ruak, to speed up child protection legislation, as we all know that the process of this law is forthcoming in the National Parliament and its outline has not yet been reviewed,” Mr. Durrani said.
At the same time, Mr. Durrani also asks for support from the Ministry of Justice and the Ministry of Social Solidarity and Inclusion (MSSI) to request the National Parliament to accelerate the discussion concerning the law.
It is recalled that on May 3, 2020, the Chair of Committee A on Justice and Constitution Affairs, Mr. Joaquim Freitas, had considered that the law on the protection of children is very important since children are the future of the country.
“Thus this law needs all the attention and, therefore, needs to be scheduled by the parliament committee A for the review,” he said.
