COVID-19 vaccine: 28 % of Timor-Leste’s eligible groups vaccinated

DILI, 02 july 2021 (TATOLI) – Twenty-eight percent of the eligible group of Timor-Leste’s population had been vaccinated since the government and partners launched the first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine campaign on april 7.

The 28 percent represents the 210.000 eligible groups who had received their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine.  Of the 210.000, around 26.000 have also received their second shot of the COVID-19 vaccine.

In Timor-Leste, of the 1.3 million population, 754.864 people were eligible to receive the vaccine.

According to the recent official data of the Ministry of Health, in Dili, 12.606 people aged 18-59 with chronic diseases have received their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. While 4318 elderly people in the capital Dili also had received at least one dose of the vaccine. In addition, 54 percent of the 213.800 eligible groups, aged 18 and above, in the capital Dili also had been vaccinated.

While, in the municipalities, including RAEOA 97.447 people had received one dose of the Covid-19 vaccine, and of this number, 11.806 had received their second dose.

President of the National Immunization Technical Advisory Group (NITAG) said vaccination is the only way to end the transmission of the coronavirus in the country: “On behalf of the government, I call on all communities to continue obeying the Covid-19 protocols recommended by the Ministry of Health and the WHO. Even, for those who are fully vaccinated, you need to obey the health protocols to protect your family, your communities, and those around you.”

Recently, Timor-Leste received another 65.000 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine for the municipalities.

So far, Timor-Leste has received a total of 359.800 vaccines, which made up of 135.000 doses of the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine given by the Australian Government, 124.800 from the COVAX Facility, and 100.000 Sinovac vaccines given by the Chinese Government.

There has been a total of 9.361 lab-confirmed cases of the virus in Timor-Leste, with 8.467 recoveries, active cases were 870 and 24 deaths, according to data of the CIGC.
