DILI, 04 july 2021 (TATOLI) – The Council of Ministers (CoM), today, approved a draft decree-law on the voter registration for Timorese people who are currently residing de facto abroad.
The Decree-Law was presented by the Minister of State Administration, Miguel Pereira de Carvalho.
The principal objective of the decree-law is to ensure the registration of the Timorese voters who are currently living and working overseas.
“This decree-law will give opportunity for the Timorese people, who are living abroad to vote in the 2022 presidential election, next year,” the Minister of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, Fidelis Manuel Leite Magalhães, told reporters during a press conference, at Government Palace, in Dili, today.
He said decree-law would facilitate Secretariat for Electoral Administration (STAE), the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation (MNEK), and the Ministry of Justice to accelerate the registration process of Timorese voters living overseas.
Magalhães informed that the registration of the Timorese voters abroad had been scheduled to take place from September 3, 2021, until January 14, 2022.
“You know, due to Covid-19, therefore, the registration process may take a little longer than usual.” he said
He said apart from the diplomatic mission and consulates, the voter mobile registration would be carried out in Australia, South Korea, Portugal, and the United Kingdom.
