NCM records 1.374 cases of HIV/AIDS in Timor-Leste

DILI, 4 august 2021 (TATOLI) – The National Commission and Management of Data for Human Infectious virus (HIV/AIDS) has recorded 563 patients out of 1,374 patients were not receiving routine medical treatment due to various reasons.

“There are 563 patients of HIV/AIDS, do not follow the routine medical treatment, especially in Lospalos and Viqueque since there are no anti-viral treatment centers provided in both municipalities, they have to receive their medicine in Baucau municipality,” The National Director of HIV disease, Atanásio De Jesus told Tatoli at the Hotel Novo Turismo, after participating in the World Hepatitis Day event.

The official said that the anti-viral treatment centers are only established in four three municipalities Baucau, Maliana, Covalima including Oe-Cusse RAEOA.

Unlike in Dili, The Director said, the patients can receive their treatment in the three treatment centers at the Guido Valadares National Hospital, Bairopite Health Clinic, and Maluk Timor Clinic.

Atánasio said the discussion has been done to expand the Antiviral Treatment Center, yet the decision must be taken by the Minister of Health.

“CNC HIV/AIDS(Commisaun National Combate HIV/AISD) has discussed plans to expand the antiviral treatment center, but all decisions must be taken by the Ministry of Health,” he said.

At the same time, he said despite the pandemic, the CNC HIV/AIDS also continues to raising awareness about the infectious disease.

“So far, socialization activities are maintained, in Liquica and cover 12 villages,” he said.

According to 2020 data from the Caritas Dili show Aileu registered five HIV/AIDS patients, Ainaro-20, Baucau-31, Bobonaro-99, Dili-930, Covalima-68, Ermera-23, Liquiçá-eight, Lautem-13,Manatuto-ten, Manufahi-13, Oe-cussi-25, Viqueque-11.

Following the 2021 data records from CNC HIV/AIDS, the total number of people infected with HIV/AIDS is 1,374 of this number 656 are under the treatment and 155 were confirmed dead.
