COVID-19 update: TL records five more deaths, 247 infections

DILI, 17 august 2021 (TATOLI) – Timor-Leste, today, reports five more deaths, 247 new cases, 37 recoveries, and the active cases were 2.349.

Of the new cases, 192 were detected in Dili, while the rest were identified in the municipalities, including 24 in Ermera, 12 each in Bobonaro and RAEOA, six in Baucau, and one in Manatuto.

The spokesperson of SIJK, Dr. Rui Maria de Araujo said of today’s cases, 38.9 percent were symptomatic.

He said of today’s cases, 174 were between the ages of 12 and 59, including 60 cases under 20 and 13 elderly persons over 60. These new cases are made up of 54 men and 63 women.

Araujo informed that there are currently 48 Covid-19 cases admitted to Vera Cruz Isolation Center, with 14 people in critical condition, one of whom required ventilation.

In the last 24 hours, the National Health Laboratory (LNS) has performed 993 PCR tests, including 49 sentinel surveillance tests, 512 through contact tracing, 163 via random screening, 106 were carried out following the request for travel authorization out of capital Dili, one for the international travel authorization, and 52 in quarantines.

Today, SIJK registered five deaths on the same day, for the first time in Timor-Leste.

The new deaths include two adults and three unborn babies.

The first deceased was a man in his 40s, who was diagnosed with Covid-19 on august 9 and transferred to the Vera Cruz Isolation Center (VCIC) on the same day. He died yesterday at around 5 pm local time at VCIC, due to multiple organ failures.

The other deceased was a pregnant mother in his 30s, who was diagnosed with Covid-19 and being transferred to the Vera Cruz Isolation Center (VCIC) on august 12. He passed away today with her unborn baby, at 1 am local time, at VCIC, due to liquid embolic.

The third deceased was a fetus who died after the mother’s 28th week of pregnancy. The baby’s mother was diagnosed with Covid-19.

The last deceased was a fetus who died after the mother’s 33rd week of pregnancy. The baby’s mother also was diagnosed with Covid-19.

The evolution of the COVID-19 in Timor-Leste, the incidence rate of coronavirus is, on average, in the last week, of 13.1 per 100 thousand inhabitants, while in Dili 29.5, Ermera 15.6, Covalima 12.7, RAEOA 12.3, Ainaro 7.1, Liquica 5.8, Aileu 5.1, and Bobonaro 4.3.

The SIJK kept calling on communities to practice the health and safety guidelines recommended by the Ministry of Health and the WHO to continue combating the spread of the virus as the SIJK’s records showed cases are again mounted in Dili, Ermera, and several municipalities.

Health authorities warned that the Delta variant may have spread to other municipalities, where cases are spiked recently.

There has been a total of 12.929 lab-confirmed cases of the virus in Timor-Leste, with 10.545 recoveries, active cases were 2.349 and 36 deaths, according to SIJK’s data.

In Timor-Leste, of the 754.864 eligible groups, 45.6 percent had received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, of which 17.8 percent have also received their second dose of the COVID-19 vaccine.
