DILI, 25 november 2021 (TATOLI) – The Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports (MoEYS) has decided to postpone the recruitment of 975 teachers until 2022, said MEJD’s Director-General for Administration and Finance, Antoninho Pires.
“According to our plan, we wanted to recruit the 975 teachers this year. However, we couldn’t do it and it has to be postponed to next year,” Pires told TATOLI, in his office in Vila Verde, Dili, on thursday.
He stressed that it is important to verify the documents of the volunteer teachers before the recruitment.
“This year, we focused only on verifying the documents of all-volunteer teachers, therefore, we postponed the recruitment to 2022,” he said.
Previously, Minister of Education, Youth and Sports, Armindo Maia said that MoEYS would recruit those volunteers with good professional experiences.
“The requirements of the recruitment hadn’t been revealed yet, but I can say that one of the requirements is professional experience. Therefore, we will prioritize those volunteers teachers who had been teaching for a long time,” he said.
The recruitment had been scheduled to take place on march 2021, but we need to postpone it to next year due to the Covid-19 outbreak.
In Timor-Leste, there are hundreds of volunteers teachers who began teaching in 2013 without being registered in the system.
So far, MoEYS had registered a total of 10,523 permanent teachers and 5,203 contract teachers.
Among the 10.523 permanent teachers, 8.365 work exclusively as teachers, while the remaining 2.158 hold the positions of principal, assistant principal, and school coordinator, and etc.
MoEYS’ 2021 Stage Budget included a budget for hiring more than 900 teachers.
This year, MoEYS received a total of US$106 million of the 2021 General State Budget (GSB), with US$61.6 million allocated for salaries and wages, US$16.6 million for goods and services, US$2.9 million to minor capital, US$7 million to capital development, and finally US$23.1 million to public transfers.
