MoPW forecasts US$1.4m for a feasibility study for the construction of Loes Bridge

DILI, 29 december 2021 (TATOLI) – The Ministry of Public Works (MoPW) had forecast US$1.4 million for the feasibility study and detailed engineering design for the construction of the Loes Bridge, in Liquica Municipality.

The Vice Minister of Public Works, Nicolau Lino Freitas Belo informed that due the heavy rain recently with the high current of the river posed a big threat to the Loes Bridge: “We have mobilized the Equipment Management Institute (IGE) to normalize the situation of the bridge very shortly.”

“So, in 2022, the Government will begin the feasibility study and the detailed engineering design to ensure the sustainability of the bridge. So that, it could last more than 100 years from now,” Belo told reporters after the meeting of the Council of Ministers, at the Palace of the Government, in Dili, on wednesday.

He said building a strong bridge requires a detailed study, saying, therefore, feasibility and detailed engineering design was important.

“MoPW also had allocated budget for the maintenance of bridges and roads across the country in 2022. So, a certain amount of the MoPW’s 2022 General State Budget, totaling US$ 174 would be allocated for the rehabilitation of the bridges and roads,” he said.

In addition, the IGE had also deployed a team to normalize the broken road in Balibo Administrative Post, connecting Dili and Maliana, Bobonaro municipality.

“We have two construction companies who supported IGE with heavy equipment to normalize the road condition in Balibo Administrative post to facilitate the movement of the communities from Maliane to Dili and vice versa,” Belo added.

He said two other bridges need maintenance, including Bilmau Bridge in Cailaco Administrative Post of Bobonaro Municipality and Dilor Bridge in Natarbora of Manatuto municipality: “IGE will soon mobilize the heavy equipment like tractors to repair these two bridges.”
