DILI, 04 february 2022 (TATOLI) – The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), in support of the Government of Japan and the National Elections Commission (CNE) joint efforts to develop a digital information platform for elections and COVID-19 awareness communication.
On february 4th, a Letter of Agreement was signed between UNDP and CNE at the CNE Conference Room in Dili, with representatives from CNE and UNDP. Through this partnership, UNDP supports CNE’s communication activities to ensure people’s access to information, including establishing a digital information platform, developing Information, Education and Communication (IEC) products, and conducting training to CNE staff on COVID-19 prevention measures during the elections. The mentioned activities involve the engagement and support of the University of WASEDA (Japan) and the Timor-Leste National University.
“Democratic participation is all about inclusiveness, and thus it is important to provide the space for participation. We are confident that this agreement will support CNE to create conditions for all segments of society members who will be empowered by providing the opportunity to participate in the upcoming presidential election,” Munkhtuya Altangerel, UNDP Resident Representative told reporters in CNE ‘s office Kai- Koli, Dili, today.
At the same place José Belo, CNE President, addressed “UNDP and the Government of Japan have supported the electoral process since Timor-Leste was established as a country. The contribution that today CNE receives through this agreement will certainly facilitate voters to access information on our work of monitoring and supervision to the elections cycle.”
The activities are part of the COVID-Resilient Project (CORE-TL), funded by the Government of Japan, in pursuit of the COVID Resilient, informed, and inclusive elections at the national and municipal levels.
The President of CNE on behalf of the Government of Timor-Leste thanked the UNDP and the Government of Japan which already supported the election during this time.
