ASEAN will conclude the “Fact-Finding Mission” this year in TL

DILI, 04 april 2022 (TATOLI)- Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) will conclude a fact-finding mission in Timor-Leste this year, 2022. This activity is made to provide accurate information regarding Timor-Leste country development in many sectors before joining ASEAN.

The General Director for ASEAN in The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation (MFAC), Milena Rangel said the progress of the Fact-finding mission will be finalized this year, in 2022. Timor-Leste will be the last country for the visit of ASEAN groups.

The ASEAN is not officially announcing the fixed schedule to visit Timor-Leste. However, the fact-finding mission will be done this year.

The ASEAN’s finding fact mission is done with the purpose to observe the real condition of some principal aspects in Timor-Leste. It is composed of Social-Cultural, Security, Economy, Trade, Infrastructure, and others. It also required more study on the legal framework of Timor-Leste for adjustment with regional laws.

“ASEAN team will ensure the progress of the country’s ability on economic growth, infrastructure development, security stability, and others. It will ensure the Timor-Leste country can be able to link with international markers and even promote local products to international trade,” The  General-Director for ASEAN, Milena Rangel told reports at Suai room, Timor-Plaza,  this monday.

In addition, TL, according to the General-Director, is required for the legal framework reformation. It must be adjusted with regional and international legal frameworks. It aims to ensure Timor-Leste laws must be suitable to the regional laws.

Timor-Leste will gain a positive impact on joining ASEAN members. It is an opportunity to join the regional and international markets. Timor-Leste has faced developing countries and is competitive in trade and economic development.

The General-Director, Milena Rangel confirmed that Timor-Leste can be sharing the value of social and cultural ties with other ASEAN countries. There are some countries that have similarities in social and cultural aspects.

“Human resources and natural products are most essential to attract the ASEAN countries to allow Timor-Leste to join ASEAN,” She said.

It is known that ASEAN countries’ members currently have a 6.600 million population. “ASEAN will establish connectivity with their ambassadors in Timor-Leste.  It is the most competitive market at the regional level.

Timor-Leste will benefit from the international market on joining the ASEAN:

  • Creating a global trade system, which is transparent and accountable, contributes to the development of the national economy.
  • Qualified human resources in each specialized area
  • Legislative system established and implemented in accordance with agreed ASEAN standards.
  • Improved national infrastructures and management that are linked to the trade system
  • Improved and increased confidence of national and international investors investing in Timor-Leste to have access to the international market.
