DILI, 09 may 2022 (TATOLI) – The President of the Timor-Leste Consumer Protection Association (TANE), António Ramos da Silva, congratulates the European Union (EU) on the Europe Day saying the EU is a model of democracy and peace.
“The EU is a model of democracy, governance, and peace in the world. Timor-Leste can adapt to these characteristics,” he told Tatoli, in Vila Verde, as part of the commemoration of the 72nd anniversary of the EU Day.
According to da Silva, Timor-Leste’s independence was inspired by the value and heritage of EU democracy, freedom, and peace.
He explained that the EU is the biggest development partner in the world and includes Timor-Leste in different matters.
“The EU has a large political bloc made up of 28 member states. That’s why Timor-Leste has the advantage of partnering with the EU to learn about gender equality, democracy, and climate change to develop the country,”
According to da Silva, TANE obtains support from the EU in a consortium with DECO in Portugal. The association is implementing the consumer rights program for four years from 2019 to December 2022 in Timor-Leste.
“The EU has a foreign policy on the issue of protecting consumer rights to the economy. The EU supports TANE in the program to empower civil society”, he said.
The president also stressed that the EU is a strategic partner for Timor-Leste in the future, as it is a model of the economy and has around 500 million consumers in terms of quality and demand of food consumption in the world.
da Silva asked the EU to continue supporting TANE in the protection of Timor-Leste consumers and continue to assist the country’s development.
