Timorese athletes take home 13 medals from ASEAN Para Games


DILI, 07 august 2022 (TATOLI) – Timorese athletes took 6 gold medals, 6 silver medals, and 1 bronze medal after competing in the 11th ASEAN Para Games, which took place in Solo of Java, Indonesia, from july 30 to august 5.

Timorese athletes competed in three different types of sport namely, athletics, table tennis, and weightlifting.

These medals won by athletes Teofilo Freitas, Domingos Lobato Pereira, and Domingos da Costa; table tennis players Pascoela dos Santos, Abelita Borges, and Bernardo de Carvalho; and weightlifter Jose Aniceto Antonio Serão.

The head of Timor-Leste’s team, Joãozinho Fereira da Conceição Fernandes, revealed that Timor-Leste’s team completed the competition with wining 13 medals.

“We have reached the end of the competition, and Timor-Leste’s team has gathered a total of 13 medals,” Fernandes told TATOLI via Whatapp.

Freitas expressed his overwhelmed feeling after winning three gold medals for Timor-Leste.

“I personally feel overwhelmed and joy with taking these medals home. I would like to thank my club JAVXIM, and my coach Rui Alves Amaral,” he said.

These athletes were selected based on their skills and performances. They had been under a three-month intensive training program, facilitated by CPNTL and SEJD for the competition.

The government of Timor-Leste spent US$38.410 on the training program and US$65.679 during the competition.

The athletes had been scheduled to return to Timor-Leste on august 8.
