Timor-Leste and Japan discuss MoU on three important issues

DILI, 3 october 2022 (TATOLI)– Timor-Leste’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Adaljiza Magno held a bilateral meeting with Minister of Foreign Affairs of Japan, HAYASHI Yoshimasa, at the Japan Ministry of Foreign Affairs office, in Japan.

At the meeting, the two Foreign Ministers discussed issues of common interests that could strengthen bilateral relations and cooperation between both countries.

According to the Timor-Leste Foreign Minister she has discussed with the Government of Japan established a Memorandum of Understanding with Japan’s Government on sending the Timorese to participate in the Technical Intern Training Program in Japan, establishing Air Service Agreement to boost connectivity, and sending Japanese investors to Timor-Leste to help economic diversification.

“When all the agreements are signed, we can send Timorese to work in Japan and learn some skills in Japan. I have also proposed to make an Air Service Agreement with Japan because Japan is an important donor for the construction of Nicolau Lobato Airport, therefore I say it is better to have an Air Service Agreement to enable the connectivity between Japan and Timor-Leste and other countries, and lastly, I also propose the Japanese Government to support economic diversification in Timor-Leste.” Magno said.

In turn, Japan’s Foreign Minister also suggested that Timor-Leste conduct a negotiation with Japan’s Embassy in Timor-Leste regarding the agreements, saying both sides can start the works when both sides have completed the discussion process on the MoU between the two countries.

In addition, Both Ministers were committed to continuing to strengthen the bilateral cooperation in the various areas that mutually benefit and Japan would like to assist Timor-Leste in the field of human resources development.

Meanwhile, Minister Magno and the delegation also visited Waseda University and presented to the students of the Faculty of Social Sciences the topic: The Role of Timor-Leste’s Diplomacy Towards Asian Peace.
