DILI, 20 december 2022 (TATOLI) – The Minister of Education, Youth, and Sports (MoEYS), Armindo Maia together with UNICEF Country Representative in Timor-Leste, Bilal Aurang Zeb Durrani, the Minister of Health, Odete Belo, and the Chargé d’Affaires of the Cuban Embassy in Timor-Leste, José Ernesto Pires, launched the accessibility improvements at the SoSYS office for people with disabilities.

Accessibility improvements included the construction of accessible toilets and a ramp for wheelchairs to pass easily.

The accessible toilets have been specially designed to better accommodate people with physical disabilities. Persons with reduced mobility find them useful, as do those with weak legs, as a higher toilet bowl makes it easier for them to stand up.

Durrani said the accessibility improvement is crucial to make the office of SoSYS more accessible for people with disabilities: “It’s a pleasure for me to be with you today, and to launch, together with the Government, two very important initiatives that UNICEF Timor-Leste has supported.”

“UNICEF is very proud to have supported the building of the ramp, the installation of guiding blocks, which are the first ever in Timor-Leste, and the upgrade of the toilets to make them accessible,” Durrani emphasized.

At the same place, Minister Maia thanked UNICEF for working closely with the SoSYS for the construction of the toilets and the ramp for disabled individuals.

“I hope that these accessibility improvements will inspire greater commitment to improving accessibilities in the offices of other public and private institutions,” Maia hoped.
