Parliament conveys condolences to victims of Cyclone Gabrielle in New Zealand

DILI, 21 feberuary 2023 (TATOLI) – The National Parliament today conveyed sincere condolences to New Zealand after Cyclone Gabrielle lashed the country’s North Island, causing massive destruction across large parts of the country.

MP Antoninho Bianco from Fretilin Party said it was sad for Parliament to learn that the devastating cyclone hit New Zealand.

“The National Parliament expresses its solidarity with the victims of the tragic disaster. We extend our deepest condolences to the victims and the bereaved families,” Bianco said.

The cyclone caused flooding, landslides, and enormous destruction to houses, roads, and many other physical infrastructures.

Eleven people have been reported dead, with thousands of people remaining missing. While more than 20,000 homes were still without power after the storm struck the country’s North Island.

New Zealand authorities reported about 10,000 people have been displaced and left homeless.

Last week, the Government of Timor-Leste also extended its solidarity to the victims of Cyclone Gabrielle.
