Timor Leste claimed six medals at the 2023 ASEAN para games

DILI, 07 june 2023 (TATOLI)- Timor-Leste’s Athletes claimed six medals at the 2023 Cambodia ASEAN Para Games.

Cambodia’s official website of the event said, over the course of the competition, the Athletics team from Timor-Leste was able to claim six medals consisting of two golds and four bronze medals from three sports events.

The Athletics won two gold medals and one bronze, the team in table tennis claimed two bronze medals and the team in powerlifting also claimed one bronze medal during the event.

With these efforts, The Government’s Secretary of State for Youth and Sport, Abrão Saldanha congratulates the athletes for their accomplishments.

“The government congratulates the athletes because they have shown their abilities and are very proud that with the existing challenges they have thoroughly represented Timor-Leste in the world,” Abrão Saldanha told the media after attending the Council of Ministers meeting in the Government Office, this Wednesday.

According to Saldanha, the achievements made by the Paralympic athletes can motivate other athletes that ‘there is effort and hard work that can produce results’.

“Currently the competition is still running and we will wait for other results,” he said.

The 12th ASEAN Para Games 2023, commonly known as Cambodia 2023, is a biennial Southeast Asian multi-sport event for athletes with disabilities to be held from 3 to 9 June 2023 in Phnom Penh, Cambodia with a preliminary 12 sports for the Olympics.

The 12 sports consist of Athletics, Wheelchair Badminton, Blind Football (5-sided football), Boccia, Chess, Electronic sports, 7-sided football, Goalball, Judo, Powerlifting, Swimming, Table tennis, Sitting volleyball, and wheelchair basketball.

The participating countries are 11 members of the ASEAN Para Sports Federation (APSF) along with a total of athletes such as Brunei Darussalam (20), Cambodia (252), Indonesia (268), Laos (43), Malaysia (144), Myanmar (82), Philippines (176), Singapore (26), Thailand (304), Timor-Leste (13) and Vietnam (128).
