DILI, 21 june 2023 (TATOLI) – The National Congress for Timorese Reconstruction (CNRT) and the Democratic Party (DP) have agreed to propose MP Maria Fernanda Lay as the sole candidate to be the new President of the National Parliament for the period 2023-2028.
Lay is an MP from the CNRT party, which won 31 seats in the may-21 parliamentary elections.
“The benches of the coalition parties have already sent a letter to the President of the National Parliament, Aniceto Guterres, proposing MP Lay to the position of President of the National Parliament. The letter was signed by 17 MPs, including 15 from CNRT and two from PD,” said in a letter.
As stated in the letter, Fernanda Lay accepted her candidacy to be elected as the new speaker, replacing her outgoing counterpart, Aniceto Guterres.
CNRT vice-president, Patrocínio Fernandes, acknowledged that the coalition had already sent a letter to the National Parliament about Fernanda Lay’s candidacy.
“Today, I also signed the letter that proposed a new candidate for the election of the President of the National Parliament. It could be Fernanda Lay,” Fernandes told reporters.
When asked about her candidacy, Lay avoided giving detailed information to reporters.
The new President of the Parliament will be officially elected during the handover ceremony of the outgoing and incoming Parliament, scheduled for 22 june.
