IOM commits to support TL’s govt in law enforcement for labor mobility

DILI, 25 july 2023 (TATOLI)- International Migration Organization (IOM) commits to supporting Timor-Leste’s Government’s law enforcement on labor mobility aim to help Timorese migrant workers abroad.

IOM, Chief of Mission, Ihma Shareef said IOM is an international migration organization working closely with the government of Timor Leste to regulate institutional laws and procedures to help Timorese Migrant workers to work safely aborad.

“Recently, IOM has supported and developed some numbers of policies of labor mobility for Timor-Leste. We also encourage the revision of registration of agency recruitment and making sure the Timorese can be safe migrant,” Ihma Shareef told journalists, after meeting with the President of Republic, José Ramos Horta, in Bairru Pité, this tuesday.

IOM continues to support the Timorese government in implementing laws, policies, and regulations. IOM Hopes will create a system of saving for all Timorese migrant workers overseas and also for those persons who are coming to Timor-Leste.

“We are working side by side with the Minister of Foreign Affairs for the elaboration of the legal framework,” She said

Se emphasized that IOM has full responsibility to protect all migrant workers from across the country and especially Timorese workers, who are working in the United Kingdom (UK) and Portugal.

Besides the law enforcement support, IOM also has provided some humanitarian support and financial to help the Timorese migrant can be returning to Timor-Leste.

IOM understood that the migrant people can give benefit to the country in terms of creating job opportunities, a social economy, and others.

Meanwhile, Timorese migrant workers have been contributing over 5 million USD to Timor-Leste every year.
