DILI, 20 september 2023 (TATOLI) – In a meeting with the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC), Karim Khan at the UN Headquarters in New York, President José Ramos-Horta expressed grave concern over the ongoing violence and human rights abuses in Myanmar.

Horta urged Prosecutor Khan to play a leading role in ensuring accountability for the perpetrators of these crimes.

The ICC is the world’s only permanent court with jurisdiction to prosecute individuals for genocide, crimes against humanity, and war crimes as well  plays a vital role in promoting accountability and deterring future atrocities.

President Horta’s call for the ICC to lead accountability efforts in Myanmar is timely and important.

The ICC is uniquely placed to investigate and prosecute the perpetrators of the most serious crimes, and to bring them to justice.

The President’s statement is a strong reminder that the international community must not stand by while atrocities are committed in Myanmar.

The meeting was scheduled at the request of the International Criminal Court on the sideline of the 78th Session of the UN General Assembly, in New York.

Timor-Leste ratified the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court on 13 august 2002, complying with its internal constitutional requirements and through Parliamentary Ratification No. 13/2002.9.
