DILI, 29 november 2023 (TATOLI) – Timor-Leste National Commission for UNESCO (KNTLU) through its Center for Science and Mathematics (SESIM) celebrates the World Science Day for Peace and Development in Manatuto municipality, Timor-Leste. The celebration took place at the Kay Rala Senior High School.

Several activities are organized to celebrate the day including camping, seminars, exhibitions, and so on.

Celebrated every 10 November, World Science Day for Peace and Development highlights the significant role of science in society and the need to engage the wider public in debates on emerging scientific issues.

By linking science more closely with society, World Science Day for Peace and Development aims to ensure that citizens are kept informed of developments in science. It also underscores the role scientists play in broadening our understanding of the remarkable, fragile planet we call home and in making our societies more sustainable.

The World Science Day for Peace and Development 2023 is celebrated with the theme: “Building Trust In Science.” The role of science in shaping our collective future can only be fulfilled when there is trust in science. It is trust in science that fuels the development and application of evidence-based solutions to our world’s multifaceted challenges.

KNTLU Executive Secretary, Luis Nivio de Fátima Soares said that the main purpose of the celebration was to encourage students and teachers to exchange knowledge in science and math: “It gives the opportunities to students to learn science and mathematical practical skills.”

Meanwhile, the Chairperson of the National Institute for Training of Teachers and Education Professionals (INFORDEPE) said science and mathematics cannot be separated from human life, because they contribute to the economic development of a country: “I want to encourage Timorese students to study hard so that they can become the future scientists of Timor-Leste.”

Manatuto Municipal Education Director, Graciano de Jesus Baptista, thanked the KNTLU for choosing Manatuto to celebrate World Science Day for Peace and Development in Manatuto: “This event will allow students to think about their future careers as scientists and so on.”
