DILI, 19 december 2023 (TATOLI) – The Australian Government declares it will continue to strengthen bilateral cooperation between the two nations including support for development in the defense area.
This statement was made by the Chargé d’Affaires of the Australian Embassy in Timor-Leste, Caitlin Wilson, to the press, after meeting with Head of State Jose Ramos Horta, on monday.
Caitlin Wilson said that Timor-Leste and Australia had already ratified cooperation in the defense area in 2022.
In addition, at this meeting, they also discussed strategic cooperation that can help development to increase economic growth in Timor-Leste, especially in the areas of agriculture and tourism.
She said that Australia is committed to supporting the Timor-Leste Defense Force through the Defense Cooperation Agreement (DCP).
Defense Cooperation Program (DCP) with Timor-Leste focuses on developing capabilities in English language skills, maritime security, engineering, logistics, infantry skills, strategic policy, governance, finance, and communications. This assistance is delivered by 24 in-country advisers, comprising 21 Australian Army personnel (stationed at Dili and Metinaro), two Navy (Port Hera), and one APS adviser. Methods of assistance include mentoring, infrastructure development, participation in ADF exercises and training, and direct service-to-service training.
Training opportunities offered in Australia include those run by the Australian Defense Force Academy, Australian Defense College, Royal Military College – Duntroon, and through the Defense Cooperation Scholarship Program.
A formal Defence Cooperation Agreement covering the relationship between the defense organizations of the two countries is under development.
