DILI, 19 december 2023 (TATOLI) – The President of the Republic, Jose Ramos Horta continues to be concerned about passport processing for citizens living in the diaspora.

Therefore, to better understand the processes related to this issue, the Head of State, on monday, held a meeting with the Minister of Justice, Amândio Benevides.

Minister Benevides informed the Head of State that the Government has already allocated funds and obtained approval in the National Parliament so that in 2024 they can start processing passports for the Timorese community in the diaspora.

The Minister of Justice also affirmed his availability to provide any information, related to policies and management of services in the ministry he leads, to the Head of State whenever necessary.

“President Horta asked me as Minister of Justice to inform him about the processing of passports for our citizens in the Diaspora, especially our community currently living and working in the UK,” Minister Benevides said at the Presidential Palace, in Dili.

Last month, the Ministry of Justice through the Directorate General of Notaries and Registration received 16,000 passport booklets to respond to the high demand of the citizens in the country.

Timor-Leste had been experiencing the depletion of the passport stock for months until the arrival of the 16,000 passport booklets last month.
