DILI, 12 february 2024 (TATOLI) – The National Parliament, on monday, approved the creation of the Monitoring Committee to support Timor-Leste’s preparation process for ASEAN membership.

“This committee will monitor the government’s activities on Timor-Leste’s preparation process for ASEAN membership. The Committee will also prepare and submit to the Plenary of the National Parliament the reports, opinions, and political and legislative initiatives related to the accession process. It will also prepare and approve the reports and opinions relating to the approval or ratification of the international instruments necessary for Timor-Leste to join the organization,” said House Speaker, Maria Fernanda Lay, in Dili.

She said the committee will discuss and vote on specific legislative initiatives or resolutions that may be presented on the country’s accession process to ASEAN.

Lay also said that the Committee is made up of eight deputies, appointed by the parliamentary benches: three from the CNRT, two from FRETILIN, one from the PD, one from KHUNTO, and one from the PLP.

Previously, Vice-Minister for ASEAN Affairs, Milena Maria da Costa Rangel had said that the ministry had taken the initiative to present a proposal for legislation to the PN that is in line with the ASEAN Roadmap.

According to Milena Rangel, the country’s accession to ASEAN requires aligning Timor-Leste’s policy and legislation with the organization’s political, economic, and socio-cultural pillars.
