DILI, 19 february 2024 (TATOLI) – The Civil Protection Authority (CPA) of the Secretary of State for Civil Protection (SoSCP) reported that more than 120 families had been uprooted last week due to weather disasters.

Extreme weather events — among them floods, storms, and landslides — associated with the climate crisis led to hundreds of displacements in Dili and municipalities.

One fatality was recorded in the Special Administrative Region of Oé-Cusse Ambeno (RAEOOA) and 127 families were left homeless as a result of the torrential rains and strong winds that hit the country between 13 and 18 february, according to the Civil Protection Authority (APC).

“Due to the recent heavy rains and windstorms, one person died and, last friday alone, 21 families from the villages of Hera and Becora had to be evacuated to the Reception Centre,” said APC’s Director of External Relations and Communications, Nelson Orleãs, in Caicoli, Dili.

The CPA reported that 127 private houses had been damaged, including one in Dili, two in Oé-Cusse, two in Manufahi, four in Manatuto, five in Viqueque, six in Liquiça, ten in Baucau and 76 in Covalima.

Between january and march last year, the Secretary of State for Civil Protection registered 443 families affected by natural disasters. Seven people died and two were severely injured.
