Timor-Leste officially hands over land to Malaysia to build its Embassy

DILI, 29 august 2024 (TATOLI) Timor-Leste, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation (MoFAC), today handed over the land to Malaysia to build its Embassy.

The symbolic handover of land by erecting a board in front of the land that will be built as the office of the Malaysian Embassy of Timor-Leste was launched by the Director-General of Bilateral Affairs for Asia and Oceania of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Marcos da Costa, and Dato Seri Dr. Ahmad Zahid Bin Hamidi, Vice Prime Minister and Minister of Rural and Regional Development of Malaysia.

The land is located next to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Prais dos Coqueiros, Dili, with a size of approximately 100×50 meters; thus, Malaysia will soon build its Embassy to continue strengthening the bilateral cooperation between Timor-Leste and Malaysia.

It should be noted that Malaysia, through its Ambassy, has been operating in Dili since Timor-Leste gained its independence, but until now it has not had a permanent Embassy office; therefore, the provision of this land will facilitate Malaysia to build its permanent Embassy in Timor-Leste.

Previously the Malaysian Embassy was located next to the United States Embassy in Praia dos Coqueiros, Dili, but that was also rented, and a few months ago the Malaysian Embassy moved to the Palm Business and Trade Center building in Surikmas, Dili, and today it has been inaugurated by Dato Seri Dr. Ahmad Zahid Bin Hamidi, Vice Prime Minister and Minister of Rural and Regional Development of Malaysia, to be occupied temporarily while waiting for the construction of the permanent Malaysian Embassy in Praia dos Coqueiros, Dili.

Previously, Timor-Leste and Malaysia had agreed to sign a property lease where Malaysia gave land to Timor-Leste in building its Embassy in Malaysia, and Timor-Leste also gave land to Malaysia to build the Embassy in Timor-Leste.
