DILI, 03 september 2024 (TATOLI) – A budget of $786,000 has been allocated by the Port Authority of Timor-Leste, Public Institute (APORTIL, I.P.) for the upkeep of the Berlin Nakroma ship in Surabaya Docking, Indonesia, in October of this year.
“We have provided $786,000 for the Berlin Nakroma ferry to conduct the maintenance in Surabaya, Indonesia, where it will be repaired by PT Dewa Ruci Agung for two months, after which it will return to Timor-Leste,” Chief Engineer Júlio Saldanha Barreto said at the Port of Dili.
The Berlin Nakroma’s main engine had failed, according to Barreto, in accordance with International Maritime Organization (IMO) regulations. It is for this reason that the technical team has contacted PT Dewa Ruci Agung. The team arrived on September 1 and started disassembling the engine in preparation for performing maintenance in Surabaya.
During the voyage, it will be accompanied by technical personnel from APORTIL, I.P., and escorted by Dewa Ruci Agung Company on maintenance in Surabaya.
Berlin Nakroma is a passenger and cargo ferry that has been operated by the Government of Timor-Leste since 2007. The ferry is a gift from the Federal Republic of Germany to Timor-Leste, connecting Dili, the capital of Timor-Leste, Oecusse, and Atauro Island.
The Berlin-Nakroma was built in Surabaya, Indonesia. The vessel is 47.25 m (155.0 ft) long, has a width of 12 m (39 ft), and can carry up to 300 passengers (20 in first class, 149 in forward second class, and 131 in aft second class), and a cargo of up to 110 tons.
